The ins & outs of Building Disputes & Inspections

As the only professional body for independent building consultants in South Australia, the Association of Building Consultants is pleased to share details about an exciting upcoming professional development series planned for November.

The education sessions are set over two evenings for Monday 19th and Monday 26th of November 2018 and will be held from 6pm at the Walkerville Council at 66 Walkerville Terrace.

Who should attend?

This professional development opportunity is perfectly suited for anyone who is either currently working as a building consultant or is planning to enter the industry. The presentations are sure to also be of interest to conveyancers, engineers and designers, builders and those working within the broader real estate sector.

What will the program cover?

The program will include presentations on typical building disputes and to how to avoid them, case studies on defective building work, building analysis (inspection pitfalls and pointers), plus benchmark inspection protocols and reporting for pre-purchase and pest inspections.

Our expert industry speakers and their presentations includes:

SESSION 1 - Monday, 19th November 6pm - 8pm

Tom Grace, Partner – Fenwick Elliot Grace 

Tom is a former engineer who ran his own construction company for over 20 years, completing many projects in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors, before entering the legal profession.

He has a wide range of experience in handling commercial disputes with a focus on construction and engineering.

His presentation will cover legal aspects of building disputes and liabilities, including the court process, case histories, rules of expert evidence.

Chris Short, Owner – Blue Chip Building Consultants

Chris has worked in the building industry since 1973. His wide experience and qualifications include being a Category 1 Licensed Builder and a Registered Building Inspector. He has tertiary qualifications in Company Law and wide experience in Technical Writing.

He is also a Fellow and Life Member of the Association of Building Consultants, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an Associate Member of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia

Chris specialises in building disputes and diagnostics. His presentation will cover reporting on defective building work and real-world examples encountered.

SESSION 2- Monday 26th November, 6pm - 8pm

David Murray, Owner - Adelaide Pre Purchase Inspections

David is an independent qualified engineer with four decades of professional engineering experience including some 11,000 building inspections. He is a Life Member and Fellow of the Association of Building Consultants Inc. and was President of the Association for a total of 10 years.

His presentation will cover benchmark content of Pre-Purchase Inspection reports, including customer expectations, risks, reporting and focus.

Roger Richter, Owner – Inspect 24 Seven

Roger has more than 30 years working in the building and pest control industry and created Inspect 24 Seven to provide a one-stop shop for clients wanting a combined expert pest inspection and pre-purchase inspection. He has Certificate 3 in Pest Management and is an accredited Homesafe Pre-Purchase Property Inspector, Mould and Asbestos ID Inspector, Swimming Pool and Safety Inspector and is Defined Expert Property Inspector (Termites).

His presentation will cover termite and pest management inspection techniques, pitfalls and case studies.
